skating in the rain
This morning it was heavily pissing it down and I was faced with a few choices to get to work - walk, cycle, drive (then spend half an hour looking for a parking space and walking half a mile in the rain anyway). Cycling is out, I hate cycling to work with all the cars and traffic lights, let alone the rain. I got my waterproofs on and was going to walk, but at the last minute grabbed my board…
As i’ve mentioned before I use big soft true kryps for skate commuting and they work pretty well in the wet, but you still have to alter your style to avoid drifting too much on corners - keep your body in a fairly upright position and steer with your feet so that if the board starts to slide you go with it rather than away from it. When I was sheltered from the wind it was actually fine blasting on through puddles, and when you get the wind behind you it is effortless.
I think I may have upset a few pedestrians by splashing them with water as I went through puddles, but then again they upset me by being on the pavement with umbrellas, often walking in pairs. Other downsides include my left shoe (the one I push and brake with) with a hole in the sole letting in water and arriving at work with soaking waterproofs and soaking board.
